What is Renewable Energy Certificates (REC)?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are market-based instruments that represent the “green attributes” of renewable energy generation. They are used to track and document the production and consumption of renewable energy.

When renewable energy is generated, it is fed into the electricity grid and mixes with electricity from various sources, including fossil fuels. RECs are created to ensure that the environmental benefits of renewable energy are properly accounted for and can be claimed by the entities that support and use renewable energy.

Who is I-REC registry, and what do they do?

The International REC Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard) is a non-profit organization that provides a robust standard for developing attribute tracking systems. The I-REC is based in the Netherlands.
The I-REC Standard is acknowledged by major reporting frameworks such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), CDP, and RE100 as a reliable backbone for credible and auditable tracking instruments. It ensures the highest quality systems and adherence to best practices designed to avoid double counting, double certificate issuance, and double attribute claims.

What are the benefits of buying REC?

Economic and Financial benefit by purchasing REC, you directly support the Renewable Assets provider – sending economic signal in the market for higher demand for Renewable Energy.
Scalability and flexibiity REC is scalable and can be purchased exactly according to your needs each year. It could be purchased at the end of the year (spot market), purchased in advanced (forward contract), or purchased monthly (spot market).
Option of technologies technology of preference can be chosen based on your company strategy from; Solar, Wind, Hydropower, and Biomass.

What do REC issuance, trading and redemption mean?

REC issuance – REC issuance is the process of transferring 1MWh of renewable electricity into 1 REC. In Thailand, this is being governed by EGAT, whose verify the generation of the electricity, ensure there is no double counting, and comply to the I-REC standard.
REC trading – Upon successful purchase, the ownership of these RECs is transferred to their new legal owner – the buyer. REC Thailand, under GMS Solar facilitates the trade and ensure the buyer receives their preferred vintage, technology at an agreed price.
REC redemption – REC Thailand, under GMS Solar facilitates redemption to the ‘beneficiary’ through our brokerage system. The claim of renewable energy use may be made without the need to physically consume it.

Which is more suitable for making renewable energy claims - Self-owned onsite renewable energy generation facility, power purchase agreements (onsite and/or offsite) or RECs?

In the context of claiming 100% solar energy use, a property owner with suitable land/rooftop space for the installation and direct ownership of a solar photovoltaic system that generates sufficient electricity for the premise can choose this option.
Where space is unavailable or direct capital expenditure is not preferred, power purchase agreements with renewable energy developers can be explored, where the claim of renewable energy use may be validated through the RECs issued from respective project(s).
The third option for claiming the consumption of renewable energy is through the purchase and redemption of standalone RECs to cover the volume of electricity consumed. This option allows for the setting of specific criteria pertaining to the nature and origin of RECs desired.
Albeit through different mechanisms, all three options serve the same purpose of allowing the claim of renewable energy consumption.

What is the difference between REC and carbon credits?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and carbon credits are distinct but related concepts in the realm of environmental sustainability:
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs): RECs are market-based instruments that represent the environmental attributes of renewable energy generation. They are typically associated with the production of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity from a renewable energy source. RECs serve as proof that renewable energy has been generated and can be used by individuals or organizations to claim the environmental benefits of supporting clean energy.
Carbon Credits: Carbon credits, on the other hand, are a type of tradable permit or certificate that represents the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They are typically associated with projects or activities that contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reductions or removals, such as renewable energy projects, energy efficiency initiatives, or forest conservation efforts. Carbon credits are used to offset or compensate for the emissions produced by individuals, organizations, or events by investing in projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of CO2 from the atmosphere.
In summary, while RECs focus on tracking and verifying renewable energy generation, carbon credits are concerned with quantifying and offsetting GHG emissions. Both RECs and carbon credits play important roles in promoting environmental sustainability and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy, but they address different aspects of the overall sustainability framework
